Role of Women in Sustainable Peace for Inclusive Development and Economic Security

Article by Shazia Marri, published in the Brussels Morning Online Newspaper on 30 July 2021

Throughout history, women have played a pivotal role in shaping the future. Whether it is the freedom struggles in Asia and Africa or the economic uplift of Europe after the Second World War, women have proved — time and again — their resilience in the face of danger and difficulty alike, and their continued commitment to build nations despite any and all hardships. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “a woman is like a tea bag – you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.”…

Statement on Turkey’s Withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention

22 March 2021

The Socialist International Women are very sorry to receive the news of Turkey’s decision to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention determined by the President’s decree on March 20, 2021. Turkey was one of the first to sign this convention, which aims to prevent and combat violence against women and protect victims, and it is vital for women in Turkey. It had been adopted unanimously by the Turkish parliament ten years ago and it had been a big moment for Turkey’s fight against violence against women.

Withdrawal of the Istanbul Convention means not only taking a step back in combating violence against women, but also going further back in terms of democracy and human rights. It is a wrongful decision that will affect all women and girls. This decision means giving up on promises made to prevent and punish violence and protect victims.

We urgently ask the Government of the Republic of Turkey to reverse their decision and to fully implement the Istanbul Convention to help keep the safety and rights of women and girls.

We declare our solidarity with our sisters who have been struggling on these issues for years and we will continue to support their just struggle. Long life to international women’s solidarity.
