Nigeria Declaration

14 May 2014

The Socialist International Women (SIW), at the forefront of women’s rights around the world:

• Denounces the abduction of 276 schoolgirls in north-east Nigeria by the Boko Haram group on 14 April 2014;

• Condemns in the strongest terms this cowardly and barbaric act, which once again demonstrates the need for a sustained and relentless campaign on ending violence against women and girls;

• Request the competent authorities to make every effort to rescue the girls and to safeguard their return to their families, as well as to ensure that they are out of harm from terrorist groups and to deliver universal and equitable access to education in Nigeria;

• Welcomes the global awareness of the seriousness of such an act through the campaign: ‘#BringBackOurGirls’, which ties in with the Socialist International Women campaign on ‘Ending Violence against Women and Girls’ launched in Luanda, Angola, on 10 April 2014.
